For a romantically draped wedding tent Mindy Weiss hung dozens of stunning prismatic glass lamps. Each lamp was slightly different than the next, which added serious character and visual interest to the ceiling. For another unexpected twist, thick rope was a deliberate solution to otherwise unsightly lamp cords. The juxtaposition of these modern lights mixed with lush florals and long farm tables with vintage mismatched chairs made it all the more dramatic and beautiful.

Photos are some of the only things you’ll take away from your wedding day and wedding day photography has drastically evolved with technology, to the point where it’s easier than ever to immortalize and share the day than ever before. This Throwback Thursday, (yeah, it’s a thing, on Twitter, check it out! #tbt) we’re celebrating wedding photography past and present!

Before Cameras

This might be stating the obvious, but before there were cameras couples still wanted to capture their wedding day. Depending on your artist, the depiction may or may not have been exactly accurate, but you have to admire the artistry! Today, some couples are even hiring artists to paint a canvas of their wedding as it happens. Everything that’s old is new again!

Early 1900s

Early cameras were huge, clunky, and not very portable. That means no candid or unexpected photos, and forget capturing your grandma break it down on the dance floor. You pretty much got one thing back then, posed portraits. The couple on the left doesn’t look very happy about it either.

The 1930s

A box camera from the 1930s probably wasn’t the easiest thing for wedding photographers to carry around.

Your parents probably have one of these puppies in their basement somewhere, and it probably still has a roll of film in it from your aunt’s garter toss. With the dawn of the first inexpensive portable cameras, it finally became possible for your guests to take part in taking photos.

The 1980s

The original Polaroid camera has been discontinued (RIP), but having a friend or family member with one of these puppies meant you could have instant photos, one of the best inventions of all time. The only thing you had to worry about was that they might all come out orange and that the bride might come out looking like she had a spray tan accident, but that was half the fun!

The 1990s

Back in the day it was common practice to leave disposable cameras on the table so you could collect your guests perspective as it happened. What resulted were amazing candid shots like the one of the photo on the left (jk, that’s just Julia Roberts in My Best Friend’s Wedding).

The 90s: Stairway to Cake Heaven

In the 90s (my favorite decade!) wedding cakes became complex architectural masterpieces. Multiple tiers, design elements, and layers, this cake is reminiscent of Barbie’s Dream House (I’d live in it!). It just wouldn’t be a 90s wedding cake without a fully functioning fountain.

The 80s: Princess Diana’s Wedding Cake

Princess Diana and Prince Charles’ wedding is arguably the most famous wedding of the 80s, and their wedding cake is no exception. One of 27(!!) cakes served at the royal reception, this was considered the “official” cake of the famous wedding. The five-ft cake featured the royal family’s coat of arms and was topped with spray roses.

The 70s: Face Full of Cake

This 70s cake is very conservative in comparison to the pranks and outfits of the bride, groom, and the wedding party.

Unlike the large, abundant layers of today’s cakes, the 60s were a simpler time. The round cake featured a classic garland design.

The 50s: Extreme Icing

Now that’s a cake! While cakes today have taken design to new and evermore lifelike extremes (just check out these grooms cakes for proof of that), this oversized wedding cake from the 50s features a high-level of artistic detail made with icing instead of fondant.

It’s rare that you’ll see bridesmaids included in the cake topper, and I admire this 1940s wedding couple for including their wedding couple so literally on their cake.

To create a custom retro touch, Barb Salzman transformed simple votive candle holders into stunning vintage photo displays using old slide projector photos. The groom from this wedding was actually an art historian with a focus on lighting, which made it all the more meaningful.
