After seeing what a chore it was for women to look their best in their dress, you’ll be more than happy to squeeze into a pair of Spanx on your wedding day! We’ve rounded up the vintage lingerie styles that women have worn under their wedding dresses for decades.

Late 19th Century Crinolines and Petticoats

Photo: Tumblr.com

In this era, it wasn’t easy to prep for your day. Getting into your wedding dress meant stepping into multiple layers first, this created the full-skirted effect simulated by modern day ballgowns.

The Corset

Photo: Fat-Quarter.co.uk

Photo: Tumblr.com

The corset has been a ubiquitous part of women’s undergarments for centuries, and have taken many shapes and forms with boning from whalebone to steel. Corsets have also evolved to create different figures depending on the fashion of the day, in the late 19th century a “wasp-like” figure was desirable, and later being “pigeon-breasted” and an “s” shape curve would be all the rage.

1920s Skirt Corset

Photo: MetMuseum.org

By the 1920s a more minimalist corset style came into fashion, but underthings were still made with an extreme attention to detail like this elegantly lace-stitched skirt corset.

1930s Simple Chemise

Photo: Blog.HankyPanky.com.com

By the 1930s simplicity reigned, and while there wasn’t much support in the undergarments, but they sure were flirty!

1940s “Bullet Bras”

Photo: WeHeartVintage.co

Lift and separation was essential to the 1940′s bride’s look!

1950s Girdle

Photo: Etsy.com

Who knows how brides of this era made it down the aisle.

1980s Built-In Shoulder Pad Bra

Photo: Pinterest.com/hanky_panky

Ever wonder how brides in the 80s got those extra-pouffy sleeves? Well, some of them may have donned bras with shoulder pads, killing two birds with one stone.

Today

Whether you’re opting for Victoria’s Secret’s super-sexy wedding line or the ever-practical Spanx, today’s brides have a lot more options (and a lot less hassle) when it comes to their wedding day undergarments.

Disco

Add a disco number to the mix and your golden!

Michael Jackson’s Thriller

There’s nothing like a fully choreographed Thriller dance to surprise everyone. Perfect for a Halloween wedding!

The Macarena

Spice up the dance floor with this 90s favorite!

The Chicken Dance

Silly? Yes. Classic? You bet.

The Worm

It takes a certain kind of bride to sacrifice the cleanliness of her dress to whip out this crowd favorite!

The Electric Slide

Young and old alike can appreciate this simple line dance!

Since My Heart Will Go On only reminds us of our favorite 90s heartthrob freezing to death and then sinking into the icy depths of the Atlantic, Celine’s more warm and gooey “Because You Loved Me” is our go to Celine jam for a wedding.

“Truly Madly Deeply,” Savage Garden

All those adverbs say it all.

“I Will Always Love You,” Whitney Houston

RIP Whitney, girlfriend knew how to sing a love song!

“Hold My Hand,” Hootie and the Blowfish

It just wouldn’t be a 90s playlist without Hootie!

“From This Moment,” Shania Twain

A sappy song we just can’t resist.

“Crash Into Me,” Dave Matthews Band

For the couple who won’t go a summer without sprawling out with a picnic blanket for at least one DMB concert.

“It’s Your Love,” Tim McGraw and Faith Hill

The perfect country duo, singing the perfect country love song!

“The Macarena,” Los del Rio

If you’re a diehard 90s fan you wouldn’t even think of ending the reception without playing the Macarena at least once!

“I’ll Make Love To You,” Boyz II Men

You’ll probably want to save this one for towards the end of the night — when your grandparents have retired to their hotel room.

Photos are some of the only things you’ll take away from your wedding day and wedding day photography has drastically evolved with technology, to the point where it’s easier than ever to immortalize and share the day than ever before. This Throwback Thursday, (yeah, it’s a thing, on Twitter, check it out! #tbt) we’re celebrating wedding photography past and present!

Before Cameras

Photo Left: HereLiesBeauty.tumblr.com; Photo Right: The Youngrens

This might be stating the obvious, but before there were cameras couples still wanted to capture their wedding day. Depending on your artist, the depiction may or may not have been exactly accurate, but you have to admire the artistry! Today, some couples are even hiring artists to paint a canvas of their wedding as it happens. Everything that’s old is new again!

Early 1900s

Photo Left: Commons.Wikimedia.org; Photo Right: Etsy.com

Early cameras were huge, clunky, and not very portable. That means no candid or unexpected photos, and forget capturing your grandma break it down on the dance floor. You pretty much got one thing back then, posed portraits. The couple on the left doesn’t look very happy about it either.

The 1930s

Photo Left: Wedding-Splendor.com; Photo Right:

A box camera from the 1930s probably wasn’t the easiest thing for wedding photographers to carry around.

The 1950s

Photo Left: WeddingPhotography.com; Photo Right: Orange-Road.com

This vintage camera would make great vintage decor in a wedding today…there’s nothing like the classics.

The 1960s

Photo Left: CutterAndTailor.com ;Photo Right: The-1960s.blogspot.com

Your parents probably have one of these puppies in their basement somewhere, and it probably still has a roll of film in it from your aunt’s garter toss. With the dawn of the first inexpensive portable cameras, it finally became possible for your guests to take part in taking photos.

The 1980s

Photo Left: JoshXKatrina.com; Photo Right: Etsy.com

The original Polaroid camera has been discontinued (RIP), but having a friend or family member with one of these puppies meant you could have instant photos, one of the best inventions of all time. The only thing you had to worry about was that they might all come out orange and that the bride might come out looking like she had a spray tan accident, but that was half the fun!

The 1990s

Photo Left: Food52.com; Photo Right: BuyOnlineCamera.com

Back in the day it was common practice to leave disposable cameras on the table so you could collect your guests perspective as it happened. What resulted were amazing candid shots like the one of the photo on the left (jk, that’s just Julia Roberts in My Best Friend’s Wedding).

Today

Photo Right: Adrienne Page Photography, St. Paul, MN

This Throwback Thursday, we’re celebrating the most delicious part of weddings, the cake! For better or for worse, cake (no matter what shape, form, or flavor it comes in) will always be our first love. See how wedding cake design has changed over the decades:

Photo: ScratchBaker.com

The 90s: Stairway to Cake Heaven

In the 90s (my favorite decade!) wedding cakes became complex architectural masterpieces. Multiple tiers, design elements, and layers, this cake is reminiscent of Barbie’s Dream House (I’d live in it!). It just wouldn’t be a 90s wedding cake without a fully functioning fountain.

Photo: Princess-Diana-Remembered.com

The 80s: Princess Diana’s Wedding Cake

Princess Diana and Prince Charles’ wedding is arguably the most famous wedding of the 80s, and their wedding cake is no exception. One of 27(!!) cakes served at the royal reception, this was considered the “official” cake of the famous wedding. The five-ft cake featured the royal family’s coat of arms and was topped with spray roses.

Photo: WeddingBee.com

The 70s: Face Full of Cake

This 70s cake is very conservative in comparison to the pranks and outfits of the bride, groom, and the wedding party.

Photo: ChicVintageBride.com

The 60s: Simple and Chic

Unlike the large, abundant layers of today’s cakes, the 60s were a simpler time. The round cake featured a classic garland design.

Photo: RandomThoughtsFromAnIncoherentMind.blogspot.com

The 50s: Extreme Icing

Now that’s a cake! While cakes today have taken design to new and evermore lifelike extremes (just check out these grooms cakes for proof of that), this oversized wedding cake from the 50s features a high-level of artistic detail made with icing instead of fondant.

Photo: Flickriver.com

The 1940s: A Cake Castle

It’s rare that you’ll see bridesmaids included in the cake topper, and I admire this 1940s wedding couple for including their wedding couple so literally on their cake.

This #tbt (Throwback Thursday, duh!) we’re getting nostalgic about The Knot’s early years (did you know that The Knot was founded in 1996?)! Since then, we’ve featured thousands of real weddings, with new weddings every week!

The Hair

Photo Left: Cluney Photography

Original Knotties rocked the princess top knot, while today’s Knotties often opt for a looser, more tousled look. What’s for certain is that a chic and stylish updo will never go out of style.

The Cameras

Photo Left: Defining Moments by Sheri Marie

Back then, the only way Knotties could compile their friends’ and families’ photo perspective was by developing film from disposable cameras. Today’s Knotties have a lot of options when it comes to fun photo opportunities, like wedding hashtags, photo booths, and Instagram streams!

The Shoes

Photo Left: Jeff Sampson Photography

While shoe styles have changed quite a bit since the first Knotties were featured, what hasn’t changed is our love for footwear (one of the most important wedding day accessories!) and the shoe shot.

The Exit

Photo Left: Agnes Lopez Photography

Knot brides have been trendsetters since day one, and always go out with a dramatic flare (literally!)
