Today marks 65 years of marriage for Queen Elizabeth II and Philip Mountbatten. This is the first time a British monarch has hit the 65-year-anniversary milestone! The two wed in 1947 at Westminster Abbey and, of course, following the ceremony the pair headed to Buckingham Palace to wave before the crowds. 2,000 guests attended the ceremony — similar in size to the guest list for Will and Kate’s 2011 nuptials. Here, a look at the couple today and on their wedding day.

In today’s tabloids, short lived marriages make headlines: from Britney Spears’ 55-hour long marriage with ex Jason Alexander, to Kim Kardashian’s 72-day marriage to basketball star Kris Humphries. Despite the short-lived celeb nuptials, there are some couples’ relationships that withstand years. Karam Chand, age 107, and wife Katari, 100, just celebrated 87 years of marriage making them the world’s longest married couple (5 years longer than the current Guinness record holders).

The couple says the key to a lasting marriage is in the little gestures they do for one another. Karam was once told that laughing makes you live longer and apparently, it makes relationships last longer too. “My trick is to make Katari laugh,” Karam says. “I like to tell jokes and make her smile. Being funny is my way of being romantic.” Katari looks after her husband by making him healthy meals. “When I was young I used to make him a nice fresh meal every night. We are vegetarian so I brought lots of fresh vegetables and made sure he was eating healthy food,” she says. Most importantly, Karam says listening is crucial! “I don’t think people take the time to listen to each other properly. People seem too busy today with work, TV and other stuff going on around them,” he says.

Before Will and Kate, America was feverish for JFK and Jackie. On this day in 1953, the Massachusetts senator proposed to his socialite girlfriend with a stunning emerald-and-diamond ring. Seven years later, the golden couple would become the youngest (and arguably the most stylish) president and first lady to grace the White House. In honor of their 59th engagement anniversary, here’s a quick run-down on their whirlwind romance:

How they met: Before reigning as king and queen of Camelot, Jackie worked as a photographer and columnist for the Washington Times Herald, while JFK was a fast-rising political star on Capitol Hill. On May 8, 1951, the two were introduced by a mutual friend at a Georgetown dinner party. “I leaned across the asparagus and asked her for a date,” Kennedy reportedly said.

How they got engaged: After two years of dating, JFK proposed to Jackie on June 24, 1953 with a Van Cleef and Arpels ring that consisted of a 2.88-carat diamond mounted next to a 2.84-carat emerald with tapered baguettes, according to the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum. In 1962, the ring was reset to include 2.44 carats worth of round and marquis accent diamonds.
