If money were no object and you could go anywhere in the world, where would you honeymoon? Not since William and Kate headed to the Seychelles, have we been this excited to find out a couple’s honeymoon destination, and we’ve had a lot of fun guessing where the Facebook’s founder and his new wife would turn up.

So I’ve got to admit, I was a bit surprised to find out that Mark Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan followed their surprise nuptials with a romantic Italian honeymoon. That’s right — with the entire world to choose from and no budget limitations, the pair headed to Rome to kick off a romantic Italian getaway, according to US Weekly.

Now, don’t get me wrong — I count Rome among my favorite cities in the world. And with Florence, Venice and Lake Como all a short train ride away, Italy is perfect for couples looking for romance. But I guess the thought of Zuckerberg and Chan touring the Sistine Chapel and sharing gelato on the Spanish Steps just like any other couple, surprises me. I was expecting a private island or a crazy adventure that the rest of us could only dream about experiencing one day.

But the low-key couple’s classic honeymoon choice goes to show that sometimes the most perfect honeymoon spots aren’t the trendiest or the most exotic (or expensive), and there’s a reason why certain destinations (like Italy) have remained the go-to spots for romantic getaways.

Tons of books professing to hold the secrets to a happy marriage come across my desk, but rarely do I get one that actually shows newlywed life like it is in all its imperfect perfection. Wedding Cake for Breakfast: Essays on the Unforgettable First Year of Marriage is filled with real couples’ accounts of their first year of marriage–and they’re far from the romantic, gift-opening, sex-filled days we imagine as we prepare to walk down the aisle. But the very real and raw challenges and experiences chronicled in this collection of essays are what build the foundation for a lifetime of happiness.

A great read to put the whole wedding planning hoopla into perspective, Wedding Cake for Breakfast is filled with inspiring reminders of what the walk down the aisle is really about. Here are a few words of wisdom from one of my favorite essays by Sally Koslow:

Think beyond the wedding to the life you want to build together. No one will remember if the groom wore a dark suit or a tuxedo.

Don’t measure yourself against the next couple. Be skeptical of others’ perfection.

Do everything you can to make sure your wives love your parents.

Keep laughing.

*Excerpted from Wedding Cake for Breakfast edited by Kim Perel and Wendy Sherman

If you really want to get away from it all and unplug, head to Georgia’s southernmost barrier island. There won’t be other tourists cramping your newlywed style — just nature, the beach and you two. The charming spot embodies the same understated elegance as its most famous guests — Carolyn Besette-Kennedy and JFK Jr., who hosted their super-secret nuptials on the island in 1996. You have only two options on Cumberland Island for accommodations: one of the National Park Service-regulated campsites or the 16-room Greyfield Inn, a secluded four-story converted Carnegie mansion set on 18 miles of white sand.
