Ben and I are thrift store people. Always have been. Our apartment is full of flea market finds, reclaimed wood furniture and lots of little artifacts we’ve found throughout the years together. In fact I found that shirt I’m wearing in the photos below at a thrift store in Tucson, Arizona. So when our photographer Mel Barlow pulled us into a nearby antique store in Williamsburg, Brooklyn to snap a couple photos, we were totally in our element! (Later, we changed it up and took engagement photos in a retro airstream trailer — also featured today on Brooklyn Bride!)

After getting kicked out of the thrift store, we made our way to a nearby diner where Mel had found a retro airstream trailer. We changed our outfits and captured an entirely different vibe.

I’m a huge fan of fashion photography-inspired engagement photo shoots. So when it came to finding inspiration for my own, I found it within the pages of a Jon Hamm and Rebecca Hall W Magazine photo shoot. Moody, sexy and real all rolled up into one — total engagement photo shoot material. That in mind, our crazy awesome photographer Mel Barlow scouted in and around Brooklyn until she found an authentic silver air stream parked in the back of a nearby diner. Ben and I love diners and we’re a big fan of cross-country road trips, so the fact that we got to have our photos in an airstream trailer in the back of a Brooklyn diner was beyond perfect. Enough of my rambling though — onto the photos!

Sparkle and sequins is so 2013! An easy way to add a little shimmer to your wedding day is with sparkly gold and silver garland. You could deck out your photo booth, string them along your ceremony aisle chairs, or hang them over the dance floor. Bonus: This is one of those wedding decor elements that’s actually easy to DIY (how-to video from the fabulous Meg Allan Cole of Meg Allan Cole Crafts below!).

Then again, if you have too much going on as it is (and who doesn’t?), there are many crafty types out there willing to sell you a set or two, like these three.

Want any easy way to capture every photo taken at your wedding? Well, we just partnered with the photo sharing website and app, Capsule, so that you can now collect every photo taken by your guests into one photo album on your wedding website. Genius, right?

All you have to do is start a Capsule account and then sync it to your wedding website on TheKnot.com. Full disclosure: I’m a Kansas basketball fanatic. So when I heard that Jason Sudeikis and Olivia Wilde were engaged, I got really friggin excited. Jason Sudeikis is also a huge Kansas basketball fan. Apparently he’s also converted his fiance because the two are spotted at games all the time. (Let’s be honest: A Kansas fan doesn’t pop the question without ensuring his partner in life to-be also believes that Kansas — home of James Naismith, the father of basketball — is the greatest college basketball school ever.)

I’ve read rumors here and there that the two might be planning their wedding in Lawrence, Kansas. That would be incredible. But even if they don’t go so far as to exchange vows on the hill beneath the Campanile Bell Tower or romp down Mass Ave. in their gown and tux, I do think they should do themselves (and Kansas basketball fans everywhere) a favor and incorporate their fanhood into their wedding day.

So from one KU fan to another, here’s how I think they should do it.

Team mascot cuff links like these little silver Jayhawks, are a simple, understated way to show some school pride.

She doesn’t have to wear it on the outside, but Olivia could take the lead from this wedding photo and pin a swatch of her mother’s wedding dress onto her underskirt, attached with a little Jayhawk pin of course.

After the ceremony, there should definitely be a confetti toss. Not just any confetti toss though — one that involves shredded up pieces of The Kansan.

And then there’s the reception. Name the tables after buildings and place on campus like this “Wescoe Beach” table name — and pop those flowers in a KU glass to keep them in water while you’re taking photos.

If they want to step it up another notch, they could hire the Kansas Jayhawk mascot to serenade them at the reception. Seriously (it’s says so right here).

Finally, if Jason really wants to show it off, I think he should rock the Jayhawk belt buckle. It’s bold, but a totally epic way to show off his fanhood.

I knew who I would ask to be in my bridal party well before we got engaged. I also knew that I wanted to do something different and creative when I went to ask them. After having already created a video tied to our engagement, I decided to put together a cheesy photo montage video full of inside jokes and references to our friendship over the years.

I set aside a Saturday and used iMovie to put the thing together (super simple) using old photos all set to the tune of Katy Perry’s “Firework” (obvsies).

As soon as I finished it, I emailed the YouTube link to them, posted it to Facebook and tagged all of them. It worked because they all said yes!

Kat Von D got engaged (on the Twitter) over the holidays to her man Deadmau5. The ring: A custom-designed black diamond engagement ring. What could be more appropriate for the goth, tattoo artist TV personality? Deadmau5 tweeted a photo of the work in progress…

And then this little stunner hit the tabloids today…

The list of A-listers with secret wedding ceremonies continues to grow. People.com is reporting that Kate Winslet has been a married woman since earlier this month. Winslet reportedly married the nephew of Richard Branson, Ned Rocknroll (yes, that’s really his name) in a small private New York ceremony attended by just a few close friends, family and their children. Very few details have been released since the news broke last night but several other celeb sites are also reporting that Titanic co-star and close friend Leonardo DiCaprio gave her away at the altar! So much for “I’ll never let go, Jack.”

Congrats to the newlyweds!

Here’s one more celebrity engagement for the 2012 list! US Weekly is reporting that Janet Jackson is engaged to her boyfriend of two years — billionaire, Wassam Al Mana. The two are reportedly planning a wedding in Qatar for the springtime and Wassam plans to pull out all the stops. An insider told US Weekly that he wants to fly Jackson’s family in on private jets for the wedding and that he wants to hire a top chef to design the menu for the reception dinner. Well we’ll be keeping an eye out for photos of Janet’s engagement ring!
