6 Reasons We Thought George Clooney Would Never Get Engaged

It looks like pigs finally flew over the weekend, because Hollywood’s favorite bachelor, George Clooney, is engaged to British attorney Amal Alamuddin, People confirms.

“George and Amal are trying to keep things very low-key but they also aren’t really trying to hide this, it doesn’t seem,” the outlet reports. “I think it’s like they want the people they love to know that this is real, that they plan on being together forever.”

Amal and George have been dating for just seven months, but we can’t blame George for knowing what he likes. Based on Amal’s impressive career as a human rights attorney, we like her too! Her firm even released a congratulations statement: “The barristers and staff of Doughty Street Chambers offer their best wishes and congratulations to Ms. Amal Alamuddin, a member of Chambers, and Mr. George Clooney on their engagement to be married.”

While we’re super-excited George and Amal are engaged (and will probably have a gorgeous and classy wedding), we had pretty much relegated George to the “handsome-best-man-but-never-the-groom” status a while ago because of these six reasons:

1. George has dated lots of beautiful women.

Most recently, George dated Renee Zellweger, Sarah Larson, Elisabetta Canalis and newlywed Stacy Keibler for long periods of time, and was married to actress Talia Balsam (who plays Roger’s ex-wife on Mad Men!) from 1989 to 1993.

2. George said this to People in 2006 regarding his love life:

“Marriage? Who knows? I’ve been married. It’s not something I’m looking out for.”

3. George said this to Extra in 2011 regarding the best way for him to get married:

“I think that’s probably the best way… on TV.”

4. George said this to Esquire in 2011 regarding marriage:

“I don’t talk about [marriage] because I don’t think about it.”

5. George said this to Esquire in 2014 regarding getting married again:

“I haven’t had aspirations in that way, ever. I was married in 1989. I wasn’t very good at it. I was quoted as saying I’ll never get married again pretty much right after I got divorced and then I’ve never talked about it since.”

6. George said this to W in 2013 regarding finding the love of his life:

“I haven’t met her yet.”

Looks like George found her when he least expected it, since he made that statement a year before he met Amal!

Escort cards are extremely easy to personalize and an excellent way to bring in your wedding day colors -- from calligraphed seating cards set atop a textured linen to apples tagged with each guest's name or small personalized bundles of lavender tied off with string. Other ways to display escort cards: Pin them to a clothesline, post them on a board covered in color-coordinated ribbon, or incorporate them into your cocktail hour using personalized stirrers tagged with guests' names.
