Oh to be an Indonesian bride! Once exclusive to Javanese princesses, today brides-to-be all over this Southeast Asian archipelago enjoy the luxurious Lulur ceremony, which takes place every day for 40 days prior to her wedding. The rejuvenating, hours-long ritual includes: a coconut oil massage; a body scrub of turmeric, ground rice and ginger; a soak in a bath filled with jasmine and frangipani petals; and an application of jasmine and frangipani moisturizer. “Coconut oil contains fatty acids that are awesome for maintaining the skin’s lipid layer, and turmeric is a natural anti-inflammatory, so it’s wonderful even for super-sensitive skin,” says celebrity facialist Joanna Vargas, founder of Joanna Vargas Skin Care. Sound indulgent to the extreme? The Javanese royals believed that the more relaxed the bride, the higher the chance of conceiving on her wedding night! “I’m all for it,” says Vargas. “Anyone who has ever tried to get pregnant will tell you that being calm and relaxed is absolutely essential!”
