Rice Holds the Key to Eternal Youth for Chinese Brides

Not only is rice the national dietary staple of China, it’s also one of the nation’s best-kept beauty secrets. For flawless complexions, Chinese brides use rice water—the water used to cook rice in—to wash and tone their skin. Rice bran contains phytic acid, which exfoliates skin to the point where it looks noticeably brighter, says celebrity facialist Joanna Vargas, founder of Joanna Vargas Skincare. “It also causes the pigment in the skin to look more even.” Another use of the venerable grain is in a brown rice mask, where rice is washed, covered with distilled water and left to sit overnight to form a paste that’s applied to the face to help banish blemishes and smooth out fine lines and wrinkles. “While it’s soaking, keep the bowl in the fridge,” suggests Vargas. “Rice tends to ferment easily in water, and you don’t want to use fermented rice—it’d be like putting mold on your face.”
