Located at the crossroads of western Asia and Eastern Europe, this former Soviet Republic is noted for its elaborate wedding preparations, the last of which is khinayakhdi—the art of adorning the bride’s hands and feet with stunning henna. It’s said that the darker the color, the deeper the couple’s love. A few days before the wedding, the bride’s female relatives will gather in her childhood home to perform the time-honored ritual. Over the course of the evening—which includes singing, dancing and feasting—revelers will proceed to dye each other’s hands and feet with the natural plant coloring. Talk about a tradition to dye for!
