Amazon’s Wedding Registry Used for Hurricane Relief

The typical wedding registry does not include flashlights, Fruit of the Loom underwear or freezer blocks, but one such registry does. Occupy Sandy, a spin off of the Occupy Wall Street movement, has brilliantly created an online gift registry to organize donations for victims of Hurricane Sandy which hit the East Coast hard last week.

The Occupy Sandy team was formed by three Brooklyn residents with the intention of helping neighborhoods that were badly hit by the hurricane and had not yet received relief. The idea of using Amazon’s registry in particular was hatched from necessity and from a desire to help. “My friend Alex said something to the effect of, ‘we need something like a wedding registry,'” coordinator John Heggestuen said. “I thought it was a great idea and my gears started turning. When we got to the store, I was so excited that I gave my friends my money for groceries and ran back to the church to start to set this up.” All items purchased off the registry are being shipped to the Church of St. Luke and St. Matthew in Brooklyn then being distrubuted. The Occupy Sandy team has raised over $10,000 in donations and continues to provide relief to those hit the hardest. “I have never seen a volunteer effort like Occupy Sandy, everyone is so motivated to help. I’m humbled,” Heggestuen told The Atlantic.

Escort cards are extremely easy to personalize and an excellent way to bring in your wedding day colors -- from calligraphed seating cards set atop a textured linen to apples tagged with each guest's name or small personalized bundles of lavender tied off with string. Other ways to display escort cards: Pin them to a clothesline, post them on a board covered in color-coordinated ribbon, or incorporate them into your cocktail hour using personalized stirrers tagged with guests' names.
