Today marks the 31st anniversary of Prince Charles and Princess Diana’s wedding day in 1981. Who could forget when Diana stepped out of the glass carriage and made wedding history? The couple was married in St. Paul’s Cathedral in front of 3,500 live guests and an estimated 750 million people watching on TV. Relive the memory with our favorite details from their day.
In case of emergency, designers started to create an alternate ivory silk taffeta gown bearing the same ruffles around the neck as the original but without the signature lace. The back-up was never completely finished. "We didn't try it on Diana. We never even discussed it," said designer Elizabeth Emanuel. "We wanted to make sure that we had something there; it was for our own peace of mind, really."
Diana's enormous bouquet was 42 inches long, 15 inches wide and Edwardian in style, containing yellow 'Mountbatten' roses (named after Prince Charles' late mentor) white orchids and the traditional myrtle.

The Bridal Party
In accordance with British wedding tradition, the bridal party was made up of children. Diana had five attendants and Charles had two groomsmen.
Charles wore his full dress naval commander uniform for the ceremony. There is ornamental braiding on the right shoulder, showing that he is aide-de-camp to his mother, Queen Elizabeth II.

The Exit
Waving to the crowds, the new Princess of Wales left the St. Paul's Cathedral with her Prince in a regal open-roofed carriage. Kate and Will left their ceremony in a similar fashion!
